Their competitor, Paperless by Mariner is cheaper and provides a free trial and money back guarantee. There's also no way to specify the default document type - I scan only receipts, but Neatworks by default categorizes most of them as 'Document' instead of 'Receipt' so I not only have to change the type after scanning, but also click on 'Re-Analyze' to trigger the OCR again which takes quite a long time. Worst, it feels like it tries to do random guessing by filling in wrong values. It seems like their OCR is the most standout feature, but the latest version i tried on the Mac 3. I felt compelled to write a review here just so other potential customers can avoid this crappy software.

The PDF should be the same as the Title in the metadata. The name is some really long cryptic name that is unidentifiable. Unfortunately, Neatworks software does not allow me to define the PDF document name template.

I was hoping I could drag out the import text areas and it would remember the settings the next time. For example, I tried scanning my Bank Statement Bank of America, and it made the fields the width of the document and there is no way for me to tell it where the fields are. Paperport automatically interleaved the pages. With Paperport, I had two choices: I could either enable full-duplex, or the Paperport dialog would let me scan one side, then flip the document over and scan the other side. Compared to that, I see a lot of promise in the idea behind NeatWorks. Neat does not have a trial program, so I purchased the software. The scansnap makes it easy to switch between these programs and each of them are quite competent at their jobs. If you really want to only have one piece of software to do these functions, you can get neatworks, but I would recommend you to get a scansnap and get dedicated applications such as evernote free, cardiris bundled with scansnap, and mariner paperless. If the OCR data had been better that could have been a killer feature, but alas since the OCR data was useless, so was this feature. One thing I did like about neatworks was it's interface for moving OCR data into a form by drag and drop. It's reporting and exporting capabilities aren't as good as neatworks, but at least I could get the receipts in quickly and accurately without a bunch of jumping around. I ended up using Mariner Paperless, which does a better job of making this process streamlined. It has a few custom fields but these don't always work correctly in the various exports and reports. The OCR is useless for most of my international receipts as is that of the competition, but the interface isn't very good for recognizing and inputting things manually, because you have to double click every reciept to get a large view and then try to copy that information over to a form in a different window that has way too many fields that you can't get rid of. For receipts it came close to the competition since there isn't much out there, but the receipt it shows you to transcribe from is too small to read. It also imported directly to outlook, entourage, or other address books such as the apple address book. I used cardiris instead, and it works amazingly well against almost any business card I threw at it. I do most of my business internationally and neatworks was all but useless on the business cards I had. That meant that I was able to get my handwritten notes indexed as well. Also Evernote does handwriting recognition which neatworks doesn't.
